Stacy Francis, President and CEO of Francis Financial, was recently published by personal finance advice website Kiplinger. Francis’ article examines the charitable empire that Bill and Melinda Gates built together and how it inspired her to create her own successful non-profit, Savvy Ladies.
After 27 years, Bill and Melinda Gates announced their divorce. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” Bill Gates tweeted. Francis laments, “The announcement shattered the idealized image of the philanthropic couple praised for building an equal partnership throughout their marriage and their work together.”
The charitable contributions the couple pioneered should be celebrated. Between the Gates Foundation and The Giving Pledge, the couple has given away billions in personal wealth and helps billionaires leverage their own dollars to “tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges”.
Francis shares how the work of the Gates and the tragic death of her own grandmother, who was in a physically and emotionally abusive marriage that eventually ended her life, inspired her to commit to giving back and make a better future for women by establishing her own financial education non-profit, Savvy Ladies.
