Stacy Francis of Francis Financial wrote an op-ed published by CNBC about the Netflix movie “I Care A Lot” and senior financial abuse. Francis says the film “provides insight on how to protect the elderly from being targeted by financial scammers.”
Francis reports that the likelihood of financial scams that target seniors like the one in the movie will continue to grow as the country’s baby boomer population ages. “Most scammers are not strangers to their victims and tend to be family members or somebody they already know.” she says.
Francis gives several tips on how to avoid becoming the target of senior financial abuse, including staying “connected with family members through texts, phone calls or FaceTime” and reviewing your credit report annually. She also provides four warning signs of senior financial abuse and advice on what to do if you find that you or a loved one are a victim.
“Although the movie may seem to have a far-fetched premise, elder financial abuse is a very common crime in the U.S.,” Francis warns.
