Stacy Francis, president and CEO of Francis Financial, has a featured article on Kiplinger that discusses the gender inequality women face in the home when it comes to house duties and child care. Oftentimes, husbands with the most amount of free time spend the least amount of time taking care of the home.
Women earning more than men is a growing trend, but with this trend comes the challenges of a household dynamic that differs from one in the 1960s. “Marriages with female breadwinners are 50% more likely to end in divorce, according to a recent University of Chicago study. I am not surprised. I am seeing more and more breadwinning women reach out for financial advice because they are contemplating divorce,” Francis adds.
Overcoming these financial difficulties does not have to be a tough process. Open communication with one’s spouse is key to avoiding resentment that builds up over time. Help is available in the form of couples counseling or financial planning. Get on the same financial page as your spouse to get ahead of any potential discrepancies and you will be on your way to happily ever after.
